The HSML is a US national position supporting the scientific and strategic interests of BioMarin within skeletal and growth-related conditions, by developing and cultivating key relationships at the health system/IDN level. The HSML will serve as a medical lead working directly with key decision makers (KDM) within health systems (and IDNs), specialized care groups (SCGs) and other organized medical institutions providing coordinated, systemic, and population-based patient care. The HSML will identify and engage with local, regional, and national level thought leaders through in-depth, fair-balanced scientific exchange and strategic insight gathering. The HSML will identify opportunities to develop collaborative initiatives to support delivery of guideline-directed medical care to improve patient outcomes.
This role will focus on integrated health systems and affiliated centers in the US engaging associated KDMs to positively impact patient care pathways and outcomes. HSML will leverage a strong understanding of the overall healthcare environment along with his/her scientific acumen to serve as a highly credible and knowledgeable scientific resource to cross-functional BioMarin Skeletal Conditions Medical Unit and Business Unit stakeholders.
The HSML will combine strong business acumen, market awareness, and clinical expertise to serve as a conduit of information to internal cross-functional stakeholders in support of strategic planning and program development.
HSML will demonstrate leadership by anticipating medical trends and providing health system related insights and actionable information to internal stakeholders that enhance the value proposition and appropriate use of BioMarin products. This work will capitalize on opportunities to appropriately influence how care is accessed and delivered for patients within the related therapeutic area.
The HSML is a team player and possesses the capacity to coordinate and manage initiatives or partnerships with external partners independently or with a minimum amount of oversight.
The HSML will work very closely with the MSL and cross-functional teams to ensure an aligned strategy delivery at the different regions. This position will report into the US Medical Affairs head for Skeletal Conditions within the Global Medical Affairs (GMAF) organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Cultivates strong and trusted relationships with medical leadership among territory healthcare systems and Specialized Care Groups
- Identify strategic evidence and communication needs for assigned HS/IDNs/SCGs
- Execute SC medical plan and tactics within selected HS/IDNs/SCG s to meet scientific objectives and company-defined goals for products both marketed and in development
- Development and periodic refinement of an approved Institutional Medical Plan designed to support and meet strategic medical objectives in alignment with Medical Unit and Business Unit strategy
- Ensures timely and appropriate delivery of scientific information on marketed and pipeline products to KDM’s and associated medical leaders within identified health systems/ specialized care groups
- Provide education relative to disease state and BioMarin products across product lifecycle to health care providers among specialties including Genetics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Orthopedics, other relevant specialists and systems leadership
- Through scientific exchange, provide feedback to BioMarin on health system-based patient disease management strategies, treatment protocols, patient journey, and processes leading to enhancing patient care
- Identify, document, analyze and communicate insights to BioMarin Medical and Business Unit stakeholders on patient care pathways and clinical / competitive trends
- Foster and maintain high clinical and technical expertise in relevant therapeutic area
- Partner with medical and research groups and compliantly collaborate with commercial team
- Participate in local, regional, and national meetings/conferences in support of all scientific and medical objectives
- Serve as a scientific resource to commercial and marketing partners. Participate in sales team training, medical updates, scientific presentations, journal clubs, and other approved meetings as appropriate
- Have responsibility for assigned special projects and mentoring of other team members
- Self-development: Develops and communicates a professional growth plan. Takes responsibility for and actively manages professional development. Continually educates self on global market issues, trends, and product knowledge as it pertains to specific business responsibilities in key therapeutic areas
- Assure compliance with BioMarin operational guidelines
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in life or health science required; Advanced degree (MSc, MSN, Doctoral level) is highly preferred
- Minimum of 3 years in the pharmaceutical/healthcare industry in a medical customer facing role required
- Experience in rare genetic diseases required, Growth and/or Skeletal Conditions highly preferred
- Experience in developing and managing collaborative projects preferred
- Experience in clinical practice is advantageous
- Experience in product launch, development, and execution highly preferred
- Knowledge of regulations impacting Medical Affairs and field activities in the pharmaceutical industry
- Project management understanding and experience; Project leadership preferred
- Ability to work in a virtual environment and knowledge of virtual and collaborative systems required
- Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and people skills
- Foundational competence in leadership, strategic thinking and planning, and decision making
- Experienced Team player and effective as an independent self-starter
- Position will require travel for engagements and Scientific Congresses (~50%)
Desirable competencies:
- Demonstrate thorough understanding of pediatric endocrinology, and competitive landscape.
- Demonstrate excellent presentation and communication skills, situational awareness, emotional resilience, and ability to develop and nurture professional relationships.
- Sustained experience in customer interactions planning, purposeful customer engagement, providing solutions, addressing perceptions and confirmation of next steps.
- Demonstrate good business acumen to manage various regions, engagement planning, strategic customer identification, knowledge of the therapeutic landscape
- Demonstrate key attributes of collaboration, accountability and agility.

The salary range for this position is: $178,200 to $267,400. BioMarin considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
