The Medical Engagement Director is a central strategic and leadership role within Global Medical Affairs (GMAF), leading Global and Regional Medical Affairs activities focused on external Medical engagement initiatives to drive progress in line with the long-term strategy and the organizational roadmap. The role requires strong collaboration and strategic alignment with the Medical Unit Global Medical Leads (GMLs), GMAF Medical Excellence Lead (MEMX), and other key stakeholders among BioMarin’s PKU/LSDs therapeutic area.
Structure: The position reports into the Medical Unit Head for Early Pipeline & PKU/LSDs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead development of the global medical engagement strategy for PKU/LSDs aligning with the medical plan and in collaboration with GMLs, the medical unit team and the GMAF medical excellence/medical engagement director.
This includes:
- Development of engagement priorities and strategy with respective GMLs and country medical leads (as relevant) through SMART.
- Collaboration with the Medical Engagement Medical Excellence (MEMX) lead and relevant team members to develop the medical engagement execution and impact plan, key performance indicators, relevant measurement and assessment tools and communication plan
- Development of the external medical expert engagement plan in collaboration with medical leads, medical engagement team and other cross functional partners as relevant
- Accountable for execution of the medical engagement strategy among prioritized countries as aligned with the medical unit
- Ensure field resource concept development aligns with strategy within and across strategic markets
- Lead development of engagement strategy as it relates to key messages from clinical trial results, data analysis, and other key publications considering objectives, timeline and impact
- Contributing member of the SMART team
- Key member of the medical insights team responsible for: collaboration on development of KSTs and KSQs; development of the reporting plan; sharing insights reports and ensuring visibility at SMART (including incorporation into medical planning), senior leadership level and other cross functional partners as relevant
- Alignment with cross functional partners as relevant, including CLS and GCO, patient advocacy, marketing leads (HCP and patient) as it applies to medical engagement planning and execution
- Strong collaborations with the Global Medical Engagement lead for Skeletal Conditions to align on pan therapeutic initiatives / processes when relevant
Desired Skills:
The Medical Engagement lead is expected to exhibit mastery-level and understanding of multiple competencies, including communication, collaboration, scientific knowledge, medical management, as well as advanced skills in strategic thinking, problem solving, business acumen, drug development, and pharmaceutical regulatory processes.
The Medical Engagement lead must be able to:
- Be recognized as a highly capable team player and facilitator of information sharing across all levels of the organization
- Actively foster and maintain product strategy working relationships with key influential stakeholders inside and outside of BioMarin
- Be a subject matter expert, demonstrating medical, technical and scientific knowledge for relevant BioMarin therapeutic areas
- Demonstrate solid understanding of cross-functional inter-dependencies across the drug development life cycle
Education and Experience
- Advanced life science degree (e.g. doctoral degree, master’s level degree) and at least 4 years relevant industry experience required
- PKU/LSD knowledge/experience ideal
- 4 or more years of relevant experience in clinical science, medical affairs, and/or drug development desired
- Successful people leadership experience desired, ideally of field-based team members
Work Environment:
The employee will be required to undertake local and international travel 25% of their time, which will periodically include weekends.

The salary range for this position is: $205,500 to $308,300. BioMarin considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
