SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Senior Director, Global Commercial Learning & Capability Transformation will lead a bold reinvention of our commercial learning strategy. This individual will combine deep experience in rare disease and product launch with the strategic application of modern learning technologies—especially GenAI and adaptive learning platforms—to build a future-proof capability model for our commercial organization.
This leader will develop and implement a global learning strategy that supports field force effectiveness, product launches, and brand alignment—while driving digital fluency and operational excellence across the commercial organization.
Reporting to the VP of Business Operations & Strategy, the Senior Director will champion a dynamic, data-informed, and customer-centric approach to capability development that moves beyond static, one-size-fits-all content delivery. The role will primarily focus on Commercial—encompassing Sales and Marketing—while requiring strong collaboration with core Business Operations & Strategy functions, including Digital, Business Insights & Analytics (BI&A), and Planning & Performance (P&P), to ensure training strategies are insight-driven, scalable, and performance-focused. Effective engagement with Medical Affairs, Value & Access, and other adjacent functions will also be important where appropriate.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a change champion—partnering with senior leadership to design and implement scalable learning interventions that drive behavioral and performance transformation globally.
- Establish Cross-Functional Alignment: Build strong partnerships across BUs, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Compliance, HR, and Regional Commercial Operations to ensure global training strategies are aligned with business priorities and scalable across launches and life cycle phases.
- Transform Learning Architecture: Reimagine learning programs by shifting from traditional training modules to dynamic, personalized, AI-powered experiences—including microlearning, simulation-based practice, and adaptive journeys.
- Leverage GenAI at Scale: Utilize GenAI to rapidly create and localize training assets, such as onboarding modules, product training, access content, and competency-based assessments—enabling accelerated deployment across global teams.
- Design Adaptive Learning Journeys: Deliver personalized development paths that adjust in real time based on learner data. Integrate capabilities like emotion AI, ongoing skill assessments, and just-in-time learning nudges into the commercial workflow.
- Maintain Content Governance & Compliance: Lead the compliant design, approval, submission (via Veeva PromoMats), cataloging, storage, deployment, and lifecycle management of training content across brands and markets. Partner with global compliance to ensure audit readiness and adherence to documentation standards.
- Support Training Delivery Modalities: Oversee a mix of delivery formats including self-guided study, live virtual training, in-person workshops, and modular learning for field and non-field roles. Include specialized content creation for Market Access, Medical Affairs, and Access teams.
- Oversee Global Program Scope: Manage learning initiatives across onboarding, ongoing capability building, recurrent brand/therapy training, and marketing upskilling. Customize programs for specific audiences and ensure global relevance with minimal regional customization.
- Measure for Business Impact: Develop KPIs beyond completion rates—including launch readiness, time-to-productivity, HCP engagement capability, and sales performance improvement. Provide leadership dashboards and insights to inform strategy. Evaluate learning indicators related to brand and disease performance.
- Integrate Learning into Workflow: Partner with Digital and IT teams to embed content into tools like Salesforce and Veeva, delivering in-the-flow learning aligned to commercial signals and seller behavior. Establish centralized access and repositories that are regionally adaptable.
- Drive Culture of Capability: Foster a culture that prioritizes continuous improvement, performance enablement, and knowledge sharing across markets—balancing innovation, operational excellence, and compliance.
- Manage Teams and Partners: Lead a globally distributed L&D team and oversee collaboration with external content agencies and platform vendors. Work closely with medical writing agencies to maintain content quality and brand consistency across therapy areas.
- Champion Best Practice Sharing: Identify high-performing programs and disseminate insights to later-launch or evolving markets, creating a learning ecosystem that scales with the business.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Significant experience in Learning & Development, sales enablement, or commercial capability building—ideally in biotech or pharmaceuticals—with a strong understanding of how training drives performance and business outcomes
- Experience deploying adaptive learning systems or LXPs (learning experience platforms), including hands-on work with GenAI-driven training development
- Strong understanding of digital content ecosystems, learning analytics, and personalized learning experiences
- Deep understanding of adult learning theory and digital-first instructional design
- Proven track record of aligning L&D strategies to commercial KPIs and launch performance
- Strong cross-functional leadership skills; able to influence senior commercial, digital, and medical stakeholders
- Demonstrated success managing global teams and external vendors
- Experience in rare disease and/or competitive launch environments strongly preferred
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or advanced training in Learning Sciences, Education Technology, Organizational Development or related field preferred
TOOLS & SYSTEMS
Familiarity with: GenAI tools (e.g., GPT-based systems), Veeva, Salesforce, LMS/LXP platforms, SCORM, Adobe, Microsoft Office
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Hybrid/onsite preferred; ability to travel domestically and internationally to support field teams and global deployment

The salary range for this position is: $213,000 to $292,930. BioMarin considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
