Job Description: The Manager, Data Engineer role supports Research and Development (R&D) within the Operational Insights Center (OIC) in designing, developing and maintaining non-GXP computer systems that process, store, and analyze business operational data. This position requires advanced technical expertise in data engineering pipeline development within Databricks and Azure SQL Server, as well as advanced Power BI development experience in Data Analysis Expressions (DAX language) and Power Query data modeling. Familiarity with operational data (headcount and financial budgeting) in the context of pharmaceutical and life sciences is required, as the data engineer is expected to create data models which accurately forecast cost and headcount models. In addition to technical skills, this role requires mature influencing skills and an adeptness in communication with stakeholders that are sensitive to their needs; understanding the unique requirements of the consumers of technical solutions produced by OIC is critical to the data engineer’s skillset. Successful candidates are highly organized and self-motivated to solve technical problems independently, display curiosity for new and modern approaches, and are active participants in stakeholder meetings in driving agreement and adoption to the technical presentation of a solution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL processes to support data integration and analytics.
- Utilize Databricks to build and optimize data workflows and transformations.
- Manage and optimize Azure SQL Server databases to ensure data integrity and performance.
- Develop and maintain interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI.
- Collaborate with other pipeline engineers, data scientists, IT, security, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver solutions.
- Implement best practices for data management, including data quality, governance, and security.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data-related issues and provide technical support to end-users.
- Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies to continuously improve our data infrastructure.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 5+ years of proven experience as a data engineer in the pharmaceutical industry or a related field.
- 2+ years of advanced proficiency in Databricks, SQL Server, Power BI, and ETL processes.
- Strong statistical analysis and data modeling skillset.
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, SQL, Power Query / M, and DAX.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure and Databricks.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Familiarity with Dev Ops and SDLC processes.
- Must have an online portfolio showcasing data engineering or Power BI reports.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate-level coursework in statistics or business intelligence.
- Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and technologies.
- Familiarity with machine learning and data science concepts.
- Experience authoring controlled documents, including User Requirements Specifications and Design Documents
- Experience managing vendor relationships and consultants.
- Experience in front-end web technologies (JS, HTML, CSS).
- Experience in Power Automate Flow.

The salary range for this position is: $null to $null. BioMarin considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
