Who We Are
For more than two decades, going our own way has led to countless breakthroughs, bettering the lives of those suffering from rare genetic disease. In 1997 we were founded to make a big difference in small patient populations. Now we seek to make an even greater impact by applying the same science-driven, patient-forward approach that propelled our last 25 years of drug development to larger genetic disorders, as well as genetic subsets of more common conditions. Through our unparalleled expertise in genetics and molecular biology, we will continue to develop targeted therapies that address the root cause of the conditions we seek to treat. Applying our knowledge to make a transformative impact is not just a calling, but an obligation to those who will benefit most. The end goal has always been better lives and now we can reach more.
And the more people we reach, the more our impact can grow. We transform lives through genetic discovery.
Our Culture
Our desire to make a positive impact on our patients extends to our employees and BioMarin is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every person feels seen, valued, and heard – so employees can thrive in all areas of their lives, in and outside of work. We seek to provide an open, flexible, and friendly work environment to empower people and to provide them with the ability to develop their long-term careers. Ultimately, we want to be an organization where people enjoy coming to work and take pride in our efforts to help patients.
BioMarin’s Research & Development group is responsible for everything from research and discovery to post-market clinical development. Research & Development involves all bench and clinical research and the associated groups that support those endeavors. Our teams work on developing first-in-class or best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients. Come join our team and make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives.
Scientist I/II, Cardiovascular Cell Biology Group
The Cardiovascular Research group at BioMarin is seeking a highly motivated and skilled scientist with extensive cardiomyocyte experience to join our team of cross-functional scientists working on preclinical translational research evaluating potential therapies for genetic cardiomyopathies. The successful candidate will be onsite full time, partnering closely with a team of scientists from Research and Early Development (RED), and other functional groups at BioMarin to advance our most promising molecules for further development.
The Scientist I /IIduties will emphasize functional characterization of cardiac myocytes of both primary and hiPSC origin, and the efficacy and safety of various molecules. These activities will focus on elucidation of mechanisms of action, cellular assay development and optimization, and identification of new target candidates. The Scientist I/II will also drive understanding of iPSC derived cardiomyocyte maturity in different assay systems. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled, innovative and self-motivated cell biologist, who will spearhead novel cell biology strategies to support new and existing cardiovascular projects. Expectations also include communication of scientific findings at project and governance meetings, and accross other forums throughout the company and externally. The Scientist I/II will partner closely with researchers from cross-functional groups to support the discovery and pre-clinical development of different therapeutic modalities.
Requirements:
- A high degree of experience with optimizing the expansion of gene-edited iPSC clones and their differentiation into cardiomyocytes is essential. Experience with scaling up iPSC expansion and CM differentiation is highly desirable.
- Planning and performance of experiments in a manner consistent with the timelines and objectives of therapeutic program teams
- Experience with successfully modeling and characterizing cardiovascular disease using gene-edited iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes is highly desirable.
- Interpret experimental outcomes, independently recognize anomalous results, and modify protocols accordingly
- Experience with monitoring iPSC cardiomyocyte maturation and function with a variety of methods including sarcomere shortening, calcium handling, energetics, impedance, etc.
- Confocal microscopy, high content microscopy, and / or live cell imaging experience is desirable.
- Experience with evaluting gene expression by transcriptomics is desirable.
- Experience with successful development of reporter, proliferation, potency, survival, functional or cell signaling assays using viral / non-viral gene transduction systems in mamalian cells (primary cells, immortalized cell lines, and / or iPSC-derived cell lines) is required.
- Can proactively troubleshoot technical issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Must be able to work in a team environment, with a proven track record of productive and collaborative research experience.
- Participates in scientific meetings, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Advanced skills in experimental design, data analysis, and data presentation. Demonstrated record of generating quality scientific publications with limited assistance from coworkers.
- Experience with cardiac myocyte cell physiology/electrophysiology and strong knowledge of biophysical methods are a plus
Education & Experience Guidelines:
A PhD in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or Biophysics with a proven track record and at least 2-5 years of industry experience.
