Scientist 1 or 2, Structural Biologist

Location San Rafael, California
BioMarin is the world leader in delivering therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with serious and life-threatening rare genetic diseases. We target diseases that lack effective therapies and affect relatively small numbers of patients, many of whom are children. These conditions are often inherited, difficult to diagnose, progressively debilitating and have few, if any, treatment options. BioMarin will continue to focus on advancing therapies that are the first or best of their kind.

BioMarin’s Research & Development group is responsible for everything from research and discovery to post-market clinical development. Research & Development involves all bench and clinical research and the associated groups that support those endeavors. Our teams work on developing first-in-class and best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with rare diseases. Come join our team and make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives.

SUMMARY

Scientist 1 or 2, Protein Sciences, plays an important role in the discovery-stage research of biotherapeutics, gene therapies and small-molecule drug candidates.  The Scientist works within multidisciplinary teams of scientists/research associates to provide experimental and/or analytical expertise in designing, purifying and characterizing protein-based drug candidates or drug targets. In addition, the Scientist will provide experimental expertise in modeling protein-protein and protein-small molecule interactions and working with CROs for protein crystallography. This position involves a unique blend of discovery, experimental, and computational skills in protein chemistry and structural biology to support both discovery- and development-stage processes for novel therapeutics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Scientist I or 2 in the Protein Sciences group within Research and Early Development, the Scientist is responsible for providing expertise in experimental design and execution, data analysis, and problem solving using standard protein chemistry and molecular modeling techniques to help discover and develop novel therapeutics for preclinical development. These include:

  • Modeling of protein-protein and protein-small molecule interactions
  • Develop protein purification and analytical methods
  • Characterize protein structure, function, and biophysical properties using techniques such as ELISA and BLI/SPR (Octet/Biacore) and other biophysical techniques for protein characterization such as DSC, DLS, MALS, sedimentation equilibrium, ITC, NMR, and/or CD.
  • Evaluate new project ideas and design novel therapeutics
  • Identify and implement new technologies or improved approaches in structural/computational biology and protein chemistry
  • Work with CROs that provide analytical and protein crystallography services to the group
  • Absent a Medical or Religious reason that prohibits vaccinations, all our incoming employees must be vaccinated

The Scientist  plans and executes experimental protocols, presents results at project team or departmental meetings, and engages in collaborative teamwork.

EDUCATION

Ph.D. degree with 0-2+ years of post-doctoral or industry experience in the fields of analytical chemistry, biophysics, protein biochemistry.  Applicants holding an M.S. degree must have 5+ years of relevant industry experience; those holding a B.S. degree 8+ years.

EXPERIENCE
A candidate with a
strong background in protein therapeutics, protein engineering, and/or structural biology is critical. The ideal candidate not only demonstrates extensive experience in protein purification, but also possesses complementary technical skills in protein crystallography/modeling, protein chemistry and biophysical bench work.  Experience in computational biology software packages and common scripting languages are desirable.

The ideal candidate not only demonstrates a thorough understanding of protein structure, but also possesses complementary technical skills in lab innovation and the development and application of novel techniques to solve challenging problems. Experience in Akta-based protein purification, ultrafiltration/diafiltration, and clarification processes is required.  The candidate must demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in teams of scientists/research associates with diverse backgrounds, and efficiently manage time to organize, prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced work environment.  Excellent oral and written communication skills and a high degree of personal responsibility are valued.

LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
Scientist 1:

PhD or equivalent relevant experience, plus 0-2+ years industry experience

Scientist 2 :

PhD or equivalent relevant experience plus 2-5+ years industry experience

CONTACTS

This Scientist will report to the Director, Protein Sciences, and works closely with research associates and other scientists within the Protein Sciences group.  In multi-disciplinary project team settings, he or she interacts with project leaders and other project team members.  He or she may also interact with external scientists from academic institutions
and contract research organizations.

Absent a Medical or Religious reason that prohibits vaccinations, all our incoming employees must be vaccinated
