The Director, Contracting Operations & Analytics, North America Commercial Operations position is responsible for ensuring the operational and tactical effectiveness of the US managed care customers contracting strategy for BioMarin specialty products reporting to Executive Director, North America Commercial Operations.  This role works closely with key stakeholders, including, the Market Access Strategy and Policy team, Managed Markets team, Trade and Distribution team, the Sales Forecasting and Analysis team and the Legal and Finance teams, to develop, plan, execute and continuously improve BioMarin’s contracting activities with managed care customers. This role is primarily responsible for the development, management and effective and efficient execution of the operations related to contracting with managed care customers.


  • Develop and lead contracting operations function
  • Create contracting framework and infrastructure for developing, implementing and evaluating contracts with managed care customers, including building and managing contracting processes, work instructions and SOPs and a governance approval process
  • Develop individual account contract proposal through scenario evaluations and analysis including financial impact of proposed discount
  • Design and manage process to oversee the ongoing administration of contracts (data validation, accruals, invoices and reporting), including recommending and managing data reporting systems
  • Identify and propose solutions to operational complexities and operational pull-through requirements, implications and impacts of contracting strategies.
  • Provide stakeholders with strategic analytics, insights, modeling and scenario development and recommend optimal solutions.
  • Execute contracting strategies with managed care customers and manage the contracts to ensure achievement of strategic, financial and operational objectives
  • Engage in negotiations, as needed, with managed care customers to support the contracting strategies
  • Provide insights on contracting strategies by developing and managing process to analyze and evaluate the performance of contracts, including establishing KPIs (key performance indicators) for each contract
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders including other functional areas (market access strategy and policy, contracting and pricing strategy, managed markets, trade and distribution, sales forecasting and analysis, government pricing, brand teams, legal, compliance, finance, IT) and external partners (payers, managed care customers, wholesalers, specialty pharmacies)


  • 10+ years of increasing experience in biotech/pharma industry, with at least 5+ years working on pulling through contracts with payers, wholesalers, specialty distributors and specialty pharmacies
  • Bachelor’s degree required.  MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in competitive and generic payer contracting required
  • Experience with specialty products
  • In-depth knowledge of US commercial and government healthcare and reimbursement environment.
  • Proactive, results oriented, self-starter motivated by the desire to do the right thing for the patients and their caregivers
  • Strong oral and written presentation skills and executive presence
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly visible and dynamic environment and to work effectively with ambiguity and incomplete information
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively, problem solve, negotiate and collaborate with stakeholders to implement long terms solutions and positively influence business
  • Ability to work independently and to operate in a matrix environment
  • Ability to influence and lead across functions in a highly matrixed organization with non-co-located teams.
  • Willingness to ‘roll up your sleeves’ to succeed in fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, paired with strong partnering and performance consulting skills
  • Up to 20% of travel within the US required
