Who We Are

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

Position description

The EHS&S Associate Director serves as the primary subject matter expert on EHS Management Systems and EHSS audit processes along with supporting the overall BioMarin Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHS&S) operations, with a global focus on auditing, compliance assurance and management systems.  
This position is based in BioMarin’s corporate headquarters located in San Rafael, California.
This position is offered as a hybrid role; remote may be considered.

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary EHS subject matter expert on EHS management systems (e.gISO 14001 and 45001) and audit processes.
  • Develop EHSS audit program to monitor BioMarin sites against BioMarin EHSS standards, compliance risks and management system certification. 
  • Work within existing (or build new) governance teams and EHS&S systems to demonstrate and verify compliance with EHS regulations, permits, statutes, local ordinances, and other externally driven requirements.
  • Lead or conduct EHS inspection readiness programs in preparation for EHS regulatory agency inspections at BioMarin sites in Northern California (Novato Campus, San Rafael Campus, and Petaluma Research Building).
  • Lead and train EHS Staff onrisk assessments to identify, assess and reduce environmental risks, high hazard processes, and financial costs related to new and existing materials used in manufacturing and research and development operations.
  • Manage a series of vendors using financial and performance levers to deliver needed services to stakeholders.
  • Assist in development of environment, health and safety policies, procedures, and related documents.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal partners/stakeholders.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Use EHS&S and company software systems effectively.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Experience

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • 10-15 years prior experience with bachelor’s degree in engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or relevant discipline.
  • Experience working as an internal EHS auditor for a multi-national organization, with demonstrable background of improving compliance at a local site or regional network.
  • In-depth knowledge of international EHS management system standards (e.g. ISO 14001, 45001).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in a fast-paced manufacturing (or research) facility, preferably with a track record of maintaining close, tactical alignment with business needs.
  • Capable of presenting EHS data and key risk information to all levels of the organization – up to and including the C Suite.
DESIRED SKILLS
  • Prior certification/work experience as an ISO auditor.
  • Certification in an EHS specialty (eg.CIH, CSP).
  • Prior experience in a biopharmaceutical setting.
  • Prior experience integrating disparate sites under an emerging global standard.

Qualification guidelines

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s degree is required. 
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
TRAVEL
  • Up to 25% domestic and international travel may be required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • Potential for two to three direct reports from the EHS Specialist level up to EHS Sr. Manager

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $ 140,200 to $ 210,200 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A discretionary bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
