Position Description

The Medical Operations and Excellence Manager, APAC manages and coordinates prioritised operations, project management and vendor management activities across the regional and country medical teams in APAC. They may also be required to represent the APAC region in regional and global Medical Affairs and Brand Team forums and interactions. The Medical Operations and Excellence Manager, APAC, will be expected to ensure efficient and effective management of medical operations and projects initiated within the region, as well as coordination of regional involvement and interactions with respect to projects or processes initiated and coordinated by Global Medical Operations. In addition, he/she will be expected to identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement of key operations to support and improve the quality and excellence of medical plans, budgets and projects and their execution.

This role would provide exposure and opportunity for an individual with experience as a medical manager/advisor in the pharmaceutical industry to expand their experience in medical operations and project management as a development opportunity along the BioMarin Medical Director career pathway or a higher-level role within Medical Operations/Medical Excellence. Alternatively, this role would provide an opportunity for an experienced operations and project manager to expand their experience within the pharmaceutical sector with a view to further career opportunities within Medical Operations/Medical Excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage medical planning cycles and process across the APAC region
  • Coordinate and manage budget planning cycles and process across the APAC region
  • Identify and manage key operations and process improvement opportunities and initiatives
  • Project manage priority projects across the APAC region and countries
  • Manage third party service provider vendors including procurement and contract management
  • Represent the region on global Medical Matrix team and Global Core Brand teams and forums if required, depending on medical affairs background and experience, and as per assigned disease areas or medicines
  • Represent the APAC medical function in other forums and initiatives
  • Be the regional medical subject matter expert on, and provide coaching and expert guidance in relation to, project management and vendor management competencies and skills across the region
  • Support and facilitate mandatory corporate and regional governance and compliance processes/procedures in relation to regional medical activities


  • A life sciences/medical sciences-related tertiary qualification is preferable
  • Diploma/certification/other qualification in relation to project management would be highly regarded
  • Fluent English speaker required. Business fluency in a Chinese language and/or Japanese is not essential, but would be highly regarded


  • At least 5 years of prior working experience in a biopharmaceutical/biotech company. Experience in medical affairs would be preferred. Experience in rare diseases is not essential, but would be highly regarded
  • Experience in a medical operations manager or similar role and/or in a Medical Excellence role would be highly regarded
  • Project management experience is required. Vendor management experience would be highly regarded
