Scientist 2, Molecular Genetics and Cellular Biology in Musculoskeletal Therapeutic Area

Location San Rafael, California Workstyle Onsite Only
Who We Are

For more than two decades, going our own way has led to countless breakthroughs, bettering the lives of those suffering from rare genetic disease. In 1997 we were founded to make a big difference in small patient populations. Now we seek to make an even greater impact by applying the same science-driven, patient-forward approach that propelled our last 25 years of drug development to larger genetic disorders, as well as genetic subsets of more common conditions. Through our unparalleled expertise in genetics and molecular biology, we will continue to develop targeted therapies that address the root cause of the conditions we seek to treat. Applying our knowledge to make a transformative impact is not just a calling, but an obligation to those who will benefit most. The end goal has always been better lives and now we can reach more.

And the more people we reach, the more our impact can grow. We transform lives through genetic discovery.

Our Culture

Our desire to make a positive impact on our patients extends to our employees and BioMarin is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every person feels seen, valued, and heard – so employees can thrive in all areas of their lives, in and outside of work. We seek to provide an open, flexible, and friendly work environment to empower people and to provide them with the ability to develop their long-term careers. Ultimately, we want to be an organization where people enjoy coming to work and take pride in our efforts to help patients.

BioMarin’s Research & Development group is responsible for everything from research and discovery to post-market clinical development. Research & Development involves all bench and clinical research and the associated groups that support those endeavors. Our teams work on developing first-in-class or best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients. Come join our team and make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives.

BioMarin’s Musculoskeletal Therapeutic Area is seeking a highly motivated Scientist I or II to join the team.  We are professional scientists with a passion for making therapeutics that have a big impact on lives and are devoted to sharing scientific findings with the community.  We value kindness and generosity in the workplace, a healthy work/life balance and emphasize mentorship and the growth and support of our colleagues.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the intellectual and hands on evaluation of therapeutic strategies in support of the research pipeline.  In the act of doing so, they will have multidisciplinary interactions with dozens of colleagues throughout Research and across the business.  This is primarily a laboratory-based role where in vitro molecular, cellular, genetic and biochemical methods will be applied.

The successful candidate has:

  • A passion for finding treatments for rare genetic diseases.
  • A strong foundation in molecular, cellular, genetic, and biochemical concepts and methodology as demonstrated through publications and presentations.
  • Demonstrable success in:
    • Designing and carrying out lean sets of experiments that produce actionable data; proposing hypotheses, testing them, and delivering reliable results consistently.
    • Rapidly mastering new fields and methods and connecting with KOLs.
    • Presenting experimental results, conclusions, implications, and next steps.
    • Meticulously adhering to electronic data recording standards.
    • Collaborating and working in teams.

    • Microscopy: Confocal or other with a breadth of knowledge in sample preparation and image analysis to visualize and quantify cellular events.
    • Deep experience in cell culture approaches: Knowledgeable on cell lines to use for various applications and Flow cytometry or FACS; has applied transfection and transduction approaches, gene editing, and generated edited or transgenic cell lines.
    • Modern and traditional molecular cloning approaches (Gibson, etc).
  • Extra consideration will go to candidates with the following skills/experience:
    • Expertise or knowledge in skeletal or muscle biology and/or disease such as muscular dystrophy and achondroplasia.
    • Expertise in mRNA regulation: transcription, stability, miRNAs, splicing, etc.
    • Liquid handling automation and application of other HTS instrumentation.
    • Experience with therapeutic modality evaluation and/or development: oligonucleotides, small molecules, gene therapy, and/or antibodies.
