Global Medical Information (GMI) Summer Intern


SUMMARY:

The BioMarin Summer Internship Program enables students to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the processes and systems within BioMarin, while gaining an insight into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The GMI Summer Intern will learn about the roles and responsibilities of a medical information professional while supporting GMI with daily operations and project management. The intern may collaborate with the GMI team on various core medical information functions, play a role in multiple projects, and provide business process and system training/assistance. The Intern will have the opportunity to participate and present in team meetings, learn to manage priorities and balance their work across multiple projects. The intern will also learn to work with international and off-site colleagues and have an attention for detail.

Intern assignments may include the following activities as assigned and supervised by their preceptor:

  • Interface with cross-functional teams including marketing, regulatory affairs, medical communications, scientific affairs, market access and clinical sciences to develop accurate, fair-balanced and current medical and technical information about BioMarin products intended for sharing with internal colleagues or externally to HCPs, consumers, and other customers
    • Research questions on relevant topics including performing literature searches as needed
    • Create and review medical response letters and other standard response documents in order to provide fair and scientifically balanced responses to medical inquiries
    • Ensure accurate and appropriate information used in response documents
    • Assist with quality assurance case review activities
  • Provide scientific and clinical support for marketed and R&D products appropriate for internal and external customers
  • Participate in development and review of medical slides and training documents for home office and field-based colleagues or external consultants and vendors
    • Provide comments to assist with review of medical information, scientific and promotional materials
    • Assist with development and update of medical affairs pipeline slide decks
  • Support Medical Affairs scientific conference activities such as schedules, booth preparation, and materials readiness
  • Assist with GMI reports for sharing cross-functionally
  • The Intern may prepare journal club(s) and educational scientific presentation(s) on topics of interest to medical affairs for educational purposes
    • The purpose of the journal club is to educate the student on how to critically evaluate the literature
    • The purpose of the scientific presentation is to provide the student experience researching and preparing a professional presentation
    • The article for journal club and topic of scientific presentation and will be pre-approved by the preceptor
  • A final project will include a professional poster presentation on a topic agreed upon by the preceptor and student at the end the summer internship
  • Other assignments and projects as agreed upon by the preceptor and student

Qualifications/Eligibility:

  • Student in accredited pharmacy program
  • English language
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office Suite Products
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment
  • Ability to quickly adopt/use new technology
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to fast-pace work environment
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Ability to be a problem solver
  • Student must be returning to school in the Fall Term OR has graduated within the 1 year of the start of the intern program 
  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week
  • Housing and Transportation to/from the office is responsibility of the Intern and must be secured prior to the start of the summer internship
