Director, Product Communications
The Director, Product Communications, will be responsible for product communications strategy for BioMarin’s established and investigational therapies across disease areas with a focus on the US region and supporting the regions. The candidate will be able to move skillfully from science-driven data communications to broad engagement programs that can educate and empower patients and families. The SD will be part of a communications team that will set the overall corporate communications strategy for the company. This role requires a seasoned candidate who is results-oriented, a strong writer and not afraid to roll-up their sleeves and get into the thick of things. The candidate will help the corporate communications function scale to the company’s meteoric growth.
Collaborate with core teams, marketing, clinical development, medical affairs, regulatory, legal, compliance, IR and patient advocacy to manage product communications around medical congresses, data and regulatory milestones and product launches, including media strategy and press release development
Responsible for executing product communications in North America and for supporting the regions in setting communications strategy and planning
Work closely with VP, Corporate Communications to develop 3-5 year plan for the entire corporate communications function
Develop clear and compelling messaging platforms that can be shared across the organization and adapted for use with key audiences
Serve as BioMarin media spokesperson on key established and investigational therapies.
Help develop strategic long-term programs that will build support for BioMarin products, including partnering with commercial on disease awareness, launch preparedness and post-market engagement programs
Establish plans to address potential product issues or crises
Leverage innovative digital and social media strategies on the corporate platforms to educate external audiences, in keeping with all regulatory and legal guidelines.
Support in the planning and management of budget for activities related to product communications, including managing external PR agencies
Manage agency PR partners to ensure activities (unbranded and branded) adhere to regulatory and legal guidelines, are in line with product communication strategy, are completed on-time and within budget, and ensure that the agency has access to the necessary tools and information to successfully complete assignments
Establish metrics to measure program effectiveness and determine areas of improvement
BS/BA in science, liberal arts or communications, advanced degree in communications, business or journalism desired
10-15 years of communications experience in the life sciences for publicly traded companies.

Working knowledge of FDA and EMA regulations as applied to the communication of investigational and marketed drugs; familiarity with drug industry reimbursement; and a good understanding of public policy challenges currently affecting the healthcare industry;
Deep understanding of regulatory, commercial and legal landscape governing pre-approval and post-approval pharmaceutical product communications.
Comfort and proficiency in translating complicated science into meaningful messages for external audiences.
Proven ability to leverage innovative technology and digital strategies to support product communications goals.
High level of professionalism and confidence to work effectively with employees from all levels of the organization, including senior leaders, functional managers, research scientists and the general employee population.
