Scientist I in Technology Development, Process Science

Location Novato, California

SUMMARY

The purpose of the job is to work with a team to develop new technologies and production platforms for a broad range of therapeutics which include proteins, antibodies, and gene therapy.  The individual will collaborate with multiple groups including Process Sciences, Purification, Analytical, and Research Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Involved in developing new processes, or refining existing ones, to optimize the manufacturing process for various therapeutic modalities (protein, antibody, gene therapy)
  • Assist with developing an -omics platform to aid in process development, incorporating proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics data
  • Design and execution of experiments in shake flask as well as in bioreactors
  • Evaluate moderately complex lab equipment; recommend purchase. 
  • Relate literature to current experimental work.  May attend external training or seminars.  Work on a wide range of processes of diverse scope.
  • Advanced skills in experimental design, data analysis, and data presentation.
  • Write reports and present to group of >20 people. Is capable of generating quality scientific publications with limited assistance from coworkers.
  • Evaluate moderately complex lab equipment; recommend purchase. 
  • Relate literature to current experimental work.  May attend external training or seminars.  Work on a wide range of processes of diverse scope.

EXPERIENCE

Required Skills:

PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience plus 0-2+ years industry experience

Require the following skills:

  • Mammalian and/or Insect Cell Culture
  • Bioreactor experienceor Process Control (BioNet, DASGIP, Finesse)
  • Plate based assay methods (SoftMax Pro)
  • Statistical Analysis (JMP)

EDUCATION

PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience plus 0-2+ years industry experience

Plus: Technical proficiency enabling effective execution of experiments and basic problem solving.  Strong verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to use computer effectively as work requires.  Ability to work effectively in groups.

EQUIPMENT

Required Familiarity with the following equipment:

  • Bioreactor controller systems (BioNet, DASGIP, Xcellerex)
  • Plate Readers (SoftMax Pro)
  • Other equipment to measure metabolites (Novaflex or equivalent)

CAREER DEVELOPMENT

PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience plus 0-2+ years industry experience.  Ability to resolve the most complex process development issues.  Ability to take a leadership role in groups and to influence others effectively. Exercise significant advanced skill in the design and execution of a wide variety of complex experiments including quantitative data analysis and interpretation of results.  Use results to design new experiments.  Write complex protocols and technical reports.  Evaluate very complex methods and technologies.  Routinely identify new areas requiring evaluation.  Exercise significant discretion in adapting complex processes and developing new processes. Evaluate complex lab equipment.  Under direction, manage external contractors to develop processes or equipment.  Make contributions to scientific publications and regulatory submissions.  Participate in external seminars and conferences.  Normally receives little supervision
